The History of The Albatross Backpacker Inn.

The Albatross Backpacker Inn was originally the towns Post Office and Telephone Exchange. It was built in 1893 and remained the Post Office until 1983 and did not re-open as a Backpacker Hostel until 2001. The buildings are now listed with the NZ Historic Places Trust and the original Post Office safe still stands impressively next to our reception.

Our Rooms

Double Rooms - Our Double Rooms include all bed linen and towels. The have one standard double bed, bed side table, reading lights, hanging rail, and electric heaters. Shared bathroom facilities.

Twin Rooms - We have two twin rooms available. One room features two single beds, and the other features a set of bunk beds. Both rooms include all linen and towels and have electric heaters. Shared bathroom facilities.

Single Rooms - We have one single room which has a single bed, bedside table and lamp, and heater. Bed linen and towel is supplied. Shared bathroom facilities.

4/6 bed Dorm - We have a combination of 4 or 6 bed dorms which are all the same price. All dorm beds include bed linen and towels are available to rent for a small charge ($2). Female-Only dorms may be requested but cannot be guaranteed. Shared bathroom facilities.

Turkish Dorm - Our Turkish Dorm is in the Old Telephone Exchange Building. There are 2 rooms of 6 beds, of which only 6 beds have the unique Turkish Theme. These beds have individual curtains and reading lights are are pod-like in their design. When booking a Turkish Theme Dorm bed please bear in mind that if there are more than 6 people booked in on any one day that only the first 6 people will have the turkish themed beds and these are on a first come first served basis. Note that these beds are also our cheapest beds since the building does not have its own toilet and shower facilities. These are in the Main Building next door which is accessible 24hrs a day.
